Welcome to ScreepT tutorial! Here you can find all informations on how to use it properly.

ScreepT was born as a crypter... but it became a multi-platform tool written for fun, and to help me during my own programming tasks.
If you find something you'll like to improve, or you want to signal a bug you can write to bugs@am-design-development.com. Enjoy!

NB: you should take care of buttons tooltips and keyboard shortcuts, they can be very helpful!

INDEX

1 - INSTALLATION AND FIRST LAUNCH

1.1 - LAUNCHER/COMPATIBILITY

  • ScreepT does not require an installation process, and it's written in java: this means that it can be virtually run on every OS having a JRE (> 1.8) installed (said this, you should consider that it's mainly tested on Windows and Linux OS, so it may behave better on these systems). It should be started using the provided launcher, in order to customize parameters (if needed), and check the state of dependencies on your computer before to launch. Everytime a problem is detected in your setup, you'll be warned through pop-up advices or with warning icons.

  • You can find the launcher inside main folder once it's extracted from the given .zip archive, just use the correct one for your OS (.exe on windows, .sh on linux/mac). The only thing you need is a Java interpreter installed, AKA JVM/JRE/JDK (minimum version: 1.8).

    Java missing? The starters (ScreepT.exe, ScreepT_64.exe, ScreepT.bat, ScreepT.sh) look for Java 8 or newer (the "jre" folder next to them, JAVA_HOME, PATH, the Windows registry). If none is found they offer to download Eclipse Temurin 21 JRE (free, about 50 MB) into the "jre" folder, with no admin rights and nothing installed system wide, then start ScreepT. You can delete the "jre" folder at any time.

    Notice: it's still possible to just launch the "ScreepT_Vxx.jar" that you find inside the "/application" folder, but remember: it's not designed to render and work the best this way... so you might have a non-optimal experience... it's better to use the launcher ;)

    Notice: ScreepT runs on Java 8 and on newer versions up to 21 (LTS). Previous versions will not work at all; versions newer than 21 are not tested yet. You can either download Oracle's release (JVM download page), openJdk's one (openJdk download page), or download it from another source (other JVMs may not be automatically detected by the ScreepT's launcher).
    At the end of the JRE installation procedure, just refresh and/or restart ScreepT. During the launch process JVM will be searched automatically, but if it's not found you can specify manually the path of your JVM /bin folder ;).

    After you run ScreepT_launcher executable you'll be lead to a basic panel where you can choose to start the software, select specific settings to run the software, or check the dependency.
    If something is missing you'll be asked to update/download it. Once the required dependencies are installed, you can start the software.
    If you're still having problems, you can try to restart the launcher.

    You don't need to pass through the launcher panel each time... if you want, after the first launch is gone, you can disable launcher panel in the "general options" tab in ScreepT menu bar under the voice "preferences -> general options".

    Fast start: when the launcher panel is disabled, ScreepT reuses the start file written by the last clean launch (LauncherBatch.bat or LauncherBash.sh) instead of preparing everything again, so it opens sooner. If that file is missing or outdated, the Java it uses is gone, or the application does not come up, the launcher panel opens by itself. With the panel enabled nothing changes: it waits for you.

    1.2 - LAUNCHER SETTINGS

    As said before, you can customize settings of your launcher, by clicking "Customize launch parameters". A new window will be opened: here you can set max and min ram memory allocated when using ScreepT. Also the stack size and LOGGING LEVEL and other options can be adjusted in this section.

    IMPORTANT: The built in values are tested and setted to be the best trade-off between performance and resources usage. it's recommended to use the default settings if you don't have any particular need.

    IMPORTANT: it's recommended to launch ScreepT as ".class", cause jar launch setting can cause plugins to not being loaded after launch.

    Java: the "Preferred JVM" list shows the Java found on your PC: Oracle, OpenJDK, Eclipse Adoptium (Temurin), Amazon Corretto, Microsoft, Azul Zulu, BellSoft, JAVA_HOME, the PATH and the "jre" folder next to ScreepT. The "Get Java 21" button next to it downloads the latest Eclipse Temurin 21 JRE (checksum verified) into the "jre" folder of ScreepT and selects it: nothing is installed system wide and no administrator rights are needed. Save the options to use it.

    1.3 - OS DEPENDENT LAUNCHER

    ScYpT is written in java language, that can run almost everyehere. However, a native launcher is created by the ScreepT launcher, and it's written during the launch phase. In order to benefit from launcher customization, just use the provided native launcher for you OS:

    • Windows: double click on ScreepT.exe launcher

      NB: On some Windows versions (for example, on Windows 10), application could fail to start when shell is disabled. To solve this issue, just go on "Customize launch parameters" in launcher main panel, and check the option "Display shell". Now ScreepT should start correctly.

      NB: If you launch ScreepT as administrator, drag 'n drop features may be disabled by default. This behaviour is caused by a Windows security option, and cannot be avoided when launching as administrator.

    • Linux: double click on ScreepT.sh launcher (remember to give it execute permissions before to launch, with the following "sudo chmod 755 ScreepT.sh")

      NB: in some cases application won't start if shell is visible: if you experience some problems running ScreepT you can try to disable shell in the launcher options before to start. NB: in some linux distros the launcher has some troubles launching the generated .sh native launcher. If you run in this issue when you press start button and the software does not start, you can launch manually the generated .sh launcher: Just go inside the /Application folder and double click on LauncherBash.sh, or launch it from the shell
      (in alternative, you can try disabling shell in launcher settings).
      NB: if you have problems downloading updates, you can try to update your java certificates with the following command: sudo apt-get install ca-certificates-java
    • Mac-OS: double click on ScreepT.dmg launcher - Coming soon!

    1.4 - IF THE EXE IS BLOCKED (COMPANY PCs)

    On some PCs, mostly company ones, the antivirus or the security policy can block ScreepT.exe and ScreepT_64.exe (Windows says it cannot access the specified device, path or file, or the file is flagged as a false positive that you cannot unblock as a normal user). The executables are only small launchers: you don't need them. Start ScreepT in one of these ways:

    • Windows: double click on ScreepT.bat, in the same folder as the exe. It finds Java (and offers to download it if it is missing) and starts the launcher.

    • Linux and macOS: use ScreepT.sh. If it does not start with a double click, open a terminal in the ScreepT folder and run chmod +x ScreepT.sh and then ./ScreepT.sh.

    • Any system: go inside the Application folder and run java -jar ScreepT_Launcher.jar (on Windows javaw instead of java avoids the console window).

    Shortcut with the ScreepT icon, and pinning it to the taskbar (Windows). The shortcut runs cmd.exe, which is part of Windows and is not blocked, and asks it to start ScreepT.bat. The icon is in Readme\Images\ScreepT.ico. The quickest way is to paste the following in PowerShell (set $app to the folder that contains ScreepT.bat): it creates ScreepT.lnk on your desktop.

    # folder of ScreepT: the one that contains ScreepT.bat
    $app = "C:\ScreepT"

    $desktop = [Environment]::GetFolderPath("Desktop")
    $shell   = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell
    $link    = $shell.CreateShortcut("$desktop\ScreepT.lnk")
    $link.TargetPath       = "$env:WINDIR\System32\cmd.exe"
    $link.Arguments        = "/c `"`"$app\ScreepT.bat`"`""
    $link.WorkingDirectory = $app
    $link.IconLocation     = "$app\Readme\Images\ScreepT.ico"
    $link.WindowStyle      = 7   # 7 = minimized: hides the black console window
    $link.Description      = "ScreepT"
    $link.Save()

    The same by hand: right click on the desktop, New - Shortcut, as location write C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c ""C:\ScreepT\ScreepT.bat"" (keep the double quotes, adapt the path), name it ScreepT. Then right click on it, Properties: set Start in to the ScreepT folder, Run to Minimized, and with Change Icon - Browse choose Readme\Images\ScreepT.ico.

    Add it to the taskbar:

    • Windows 10: right click on the shortcut and choose Pin to taskbar.

    • Windows 11: right click on the shortcut, Show more options, Pin to taskbar (or drag the shortcut onto the taskbar).

    • If the pin option is not shown for a shortcut that runs cmd.exe, use this variant that starts Java directly (it also has no console window): set $java to the javaw.exe of your Java, or of the jre folder downloaded by ScreepT.

    $app  = "C:\ScreepT"
    $java = "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_162\bin\javaw.exe"   # or "$app\jre\bin\javaw.exe"

    $desktop = [Environment]::GetFolderPath("Desktop")
    $shell   = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell
    $link    = $shell.CreateShortcut("$desktop\ScreepT.lnk")
    $link.TargetPath       = $java
    $link.Arguments        = "-jar `"$app\Application\ScreepT_Launcher.jar`""
    $link.WorkingDirectory = "$app\Application"
    $link.IconLocation     = "$app\Readme\Images\ScreepT.ico"
    $link.Save()

    NB: these shortcuts go through the normal launcher, so everything works as usual (launcher options, plugins, updates).

    Right click menu ("Open With ScreepT"). The menu item Add to Windows context menu after right click on file works without ScreepT.exe and without administrator rights: it writes the entry for your user only and asks whether it should start ScreepT.bat (works everywhere, shows a minimized console window) or ScreepT.exe (no console window, but it may be blocked on company PCs). Use Remove from Windows file right click context menu to take it away. When you open a .log file (with this menu, drag and drop or the open dialog) ScreepT asks whether to open it in the Text Editor or with LogSearch. In the same way Restart as administrator starts ScreepT.bat with administrator rights when it is present (the UAC prompt appears), and uses the exe only when there is no bat. The option to start ScreepT at login does the same: it creates a shortcut in the Startup folder of your user (no administrator rights needed) that starts ScreepT.bat.
